Telangana Seeks Deferral of Centre's Water-Sharing Meet with Andhra Pradesh

Uncertainty surrounds a meeting called by the Ministry of Jal Shakti on Wednesday to resolve inter-state water-sharing issues between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Telangana government, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has requested the Centre to postpone the meeting until all statutory clearances and stakeholder consultations regarding the Polavaram–Banakacherla link project are completed.

In a formal letter to the Jal Shakti Ministry, Telangana’s Chief Secretary labelled the Banakacherla project “illegal,” citing the lack of necessary regulatory approvals. The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) has already rejected Andhra Pradesh’s pre-feasibility report for the project. Telangana has also demanded a revision of the meeting agenda.

Mamata to Lead Protest March Against 'Harassment' of Bengali Migrants

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will on Wednesday lead a protest rally in Kolkata, accusing BJP-ruled states of targeting Bengali-speaking migrant workers. The rally will start from College Square and conclude at Dorina Crossing.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has alleged that migrants are being harassed and detained in states such as Odisha, Delhi, Assam, and Jharkhand. TMC MPs Sagarika Ghosh, Saket Gokhale, and Sukhendu Sekhar Roy recently visited Vasant Kunj in Delhi, where a Bengali-majority locality allegedly faced electricity and water outages.

Posting on X, Ghosh said: “Don’t torment Bangla-speaking migrant workers and call these defenceless citizens of India ‘illegal’ or ‘foreigners’ just because they speak Bangla… How DARE the BJP insult the language of Tagore, Subhas Bose, and Vivekananda!”

SC to Hear Plea Against Release of 'Udaipur Files'

The Supreme Court will on Wednesday hear a petition filed by Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, seeking a stay on the release of the film Udaipur Files.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi confirmed that the plea will be heard alongside the filmmakers’ challenge to the Delhi High Court’s interim order staying the release. The film was scheduled for release on July 11 but was held back over concerns that it might incite social disharmony.

Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, representing the accused, argued that the release would compromise the right to a fair trial.

Calcutta HC to Hear Appeal of RG Kar Rape-Murder Convict

The Calcutta High Court is set to hear an appeal on Wednesday filed by Sanjay Roy, who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Roy has pleaded for acquittal, claiming innocence. The division bench of Justices Debangsu Basak and Prasenjit Biswas will hear the case. While the court has already admitted the CBI’s appeal in the matter, it rejected a separate plea by the West Bengal government challenging the trial court’s sentence.

Roy was sentenced on January 20 to remain in prison for the rest of his natural life.

Rahul Gandhi Visits Assam Amid Political Snubs

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi is visiting Assam on Wednesday, where he will meet Congress workers in Kamrup district.

However, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed the visit, stating, “Now that he has lost the elections, why should I spend time on him? He has no importance after losing a series of elections.”
