Surat Hit by Torrential Rains for Second Day: Schools Closed Mid-Session, 200+ Bus Trips Cancelled
Surat continued to reel under relentless rainfall for the second consecutive day, throwing normal life out of gear on Monday. The heavy downpour forced the mid-session closure of schools and colleges, and led to the cancellation of over 200 city bus trips due to severe waterlogging across various parts of the city.
According to the Surat Flood Control Department, the city received 8.66 inches of rain between 6 AM and 2 PM on Monday, following 7.22 inches on Sunday.
In response to the flooding, District Collector Sourabh Pardhi directed all schools to declare a holiday for both morning and afternoon sessions. The Surat District Education Department instructed school authorities to ensure that students returned home safely.
In several localities, school vans and autorickshaws struggled to reach campuses due to flooded roads, leaving many parents to wade through knee-deep water to pick up their children.
A concerning incident was reported in the Varachha area, where 28 students from a school operated by the Unnati Charitable Trust had to be rescued by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) Fire Department after their school premises were surrounded by rising floodwaters. The students were safely relocated to a secure area.
